Augmented Music

"Augmented Music!" is an international project mixing art, science, and engineering to create a new form of inclusive musical expression. Specifically, we want to produce artistic works based on a new musical language accessible to people with a handicap.

We collaborated with two Swiss artists to create an audio-tactile installation that will allow people with hearing loss to experience music through their whole bodies. This installation will be exhibited in the Museum of Art and History of Geneva for a year starting in November 2021. We are currently producing the first two prototypes called “Kalimba Chair” and “Cochlear Chair.” The first is inspired by an African traditional musical instrument equipped with a shell and different bars that resonate at specific frequencies. The human cochlea has inspired the second prototype. Like our ear vibrates at well-defined frequencies, this chair will be able to transmit the full spectrum of music along the body.
