At Spin-Out Day students from the HardTech Entreprenuership course were matched with opportunities to support them in their entrepreneurial endeaveurs

HardTech Entrepreneurship Spin-Out Day Spring 2018 made DTU Skylab buzz loud with the passion, drive and ingenuity of 165 students that have in 35 teams pitched their business ideas to investors, potential customers or partners. The winner of the semester’s course was a group of students that have developed a smart reusable seal for shipping containers. The team decided to continue the project as a startup.

The Spin-out Day on Wednesday the 23rd of May marked the conclusion of the student’s participation in the HardTech Entrepreneurship course from DTU MEC, where they have gone through an intense process of technology assessment, market research, validation and prototype development.

"The Spin-Out Day has been one of the best experiences for our studies. We used Spin-Out Day to get in touch with investors, mentors and stakeholders that definitely will help in our forward journey as a startup. A lot of hard work resulted in the four-minute pitch that gave us the victory. The competition was very strong - we engaged with many promising startups that could just as well have won. Nevertheless, we are very happy for the grand prize and we will make our effort to spend the money wisely on building our startup.” Says Morten Schnack the student leading the team and soon-to-be ISeal Digital´s CEO.

The winners received a 50.000 DKK check by Otto Bruuns’ Fond, to be spend on startup services, as well as a Discovery Loan of 200.000 DKK by PreSeed Ventures, to be unlocked at the end of their studies as well as a mentoring package. During the award ceremony, 10 trips were given to the top 10 techpreneurs of the course to attend an entrepreneurship bootcamp at UC Berkeley."It was great to work with 4 enthusiastic students on this project. They took the idea, tweak it into a more worldwide usable solution. We believe that Mobile Connect will change the way we use our Mobile to authenticate so that companies know who they are dealing with. The ISeal Digital team proved that there are many scenarios where we can use this 2FA. The container seal is a great challenge and the students’ team nailed it. We are looking forward to work together with them to explore this concept." says Lieuwe op ´t Land, Technical Product Manager at Telia and challenge owner.

“It was great to give out so many awards to top teams and students to help them get to the next level. iSEAL were deserving winners with huge potential, definitely a team to keep an eye on” says Thomas Howard, DTU Associate Professor who is responsible for the program.

During the course the students have applied their academic knowledge, innovative skills and entrepreneurial mindsets to find ways to take advanced technology in the form of DTU research, patents, inventions, technologies or challenges from private companies to the market, by creating the backbone of a potential new spin-out company.

In the Hardtech Entrepreneurship course the students worked on an alternative market developments for an already existing technology during a 13 weeks period. The conclusion of their work was showed during the Spin-Out Day as an official closure of the program. The event is set up as a Tech Fair with a business pitch competition, where the teams showed their projects for the participants and pitched them to potential investors, customers or partners. The course will start again in the Fall. Further information about the course can be found at www.hardtechentrepreneurship.dk.
